Pastirma dates back to before the Ottoman Empire and likely originated in Armenia. The dried paste coating the outside serves a double purpose of enhancing flavour whilst also protect the meat from spoiling.
You will be very hard pressed to find this luxurious product elsewhere in South Africa.
It is delicious on it's own and drizzled in lemon juice, olive is also optional, and it goes extremely well with goat cheese. Pairs very nicely with fruit preserves and nuts. For all its flavor, it surprisingly does not dominate other produce eaten with it!
